Reem Abd Ulhamid

A multilingual independent journalist, editor and researcher with more than 16 years of working in journalistic field, mainly in France and West Bank.

I possess a sound experience in journalism in several settings, including newsrooms, documentary films as well as managing teams of journalists, editing, strategizing, and drafting editorial themes for digital publications around topics as: censorship, technology and human rights, gender issues and environment.

The content on this website is divided into two sections; stories that got published and those that were rejected or/and censored, enlisted in the censored section.

In 2013 my research titled “self censorship practices in Palestinian public and private media outlets in the West Bank got rejected after I presented results at the final stage. The research documented violations committed against journalists by the Palestinian Authority in the context of division between Hamas and Fatah political parties in 2007. The research was based on long interviews conducted with 21 Palestinian working journalists in the West Bank. The interviewees shared vulnerable traumatic experiences, and they remain anonymous as agreed.

Other content in this section was not developed into final stages and got refused at mere proposal for myriads of reasons but mainly it didn’t have potential for electing enough ‘likes’ and ‘clicks’ or the famous phrase ‘it’s not a priority’.

As for research, I am intrigued by investigating different types of censorship and surveillance systems practiced in both colonial and post-colonial contexts. I possess a master’s degree in Global Communications from the American University of Paris and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Birzeit University.

Great stories have a personality. Consider telling a great story that provides personality. Writing a story with personality for potential clients will assist with making a relationship connection. This shows up in small quirks like word choices or phrases. Write from your point of view, not from someone else's experience.

Great stories are for everyone even when only written for just one person. If you try to write with a wide, general audience in mind, your story will sound fake and lack emotion. No one will be interested. Write for one person. If it’s genuine for the one, it’s genuine for the rest.
